Zhu Liang—Chinese Contemporary Painter
Between the Absurd and the Naive: In Search of the True “Small Self”
“I don’t want to paint things people find unfathomable. I just want to paint an elephant rolling its eyes, a glass raised to life. If people can see themselves in my paintings and smile knowingly, that is enough.”

About the Artist
About
Zhu Liang is a widely followed contemporary artist in China whose work moves outside both grand narratives and digital rationality. A graduate of the School of Art, Soochow University, he was among the country’s early creators of 3D digital art and animation drawing. His background in game art gave him a sure command of colour, space and graphic symbols. He fuses a Pop visual language with the folk heritage of Taohuawu woodblock New Year prints and Yunnan paper-horse talismans, forming an unmistakable style.
He focuses on the expression of individual emotion. In his words: “The small self is social too; every individual is part of what makes up society as a whole.” The refinement of the Jiangnan literati sensibility, meeting the free and absurd energy of his pictures, gives his work its particular charm.
Artistic Trajectory
Curating · A Book of an Artist
Zhu Liang is also a curator. He initiated and continues to lead the exhibition series A Book of an Artist, inviting painters, sculptors, installation and video artists each to make one work on the theme of the book. For him, curating is an extension of making: like assembling found objects in the studio, he recombines works, spaces and people so that the “small selves” of different artists can see one another in one place.
